Monasteries - Cohesive Strings of the European Art Scene

Monasteries were important centres of cultural-historical, artistic, scientific and spiritual development in Europe both in the Middle Ages and in Modern Time. Due to close connections with the orders' parent monasteries, artistic innovations spread rapidly from one land to another, and frequently artists travelled themselves, thus directly bringing the most progressive trends in the sphere of artistic creativity also to the Slovene lands. Numerous monuments of the highest quality on the Slovene territory were created exactly within the framework of monastic art; and, above all, via monastic connections they were integrated in the European artistic and spiritual context, but they have nevertheless too often been studied in an isolated way. Insufficient attention has been paid to numerous aspects in the research into medieval and modern monastic art in Slovenia: integration of the monuments in the contemporary European monastic art; the influence of monastic art on non-monastic sacred as well as secular art; itinerant artists and the connections between the patrons in the monasteries of the same order; typological and stylistic development of individual segments within monastic art (e.g. early architecture, architectural sculpture, painting, book illumination); spiritual context of the patronage; reception and the significance of monastic art.

The research will render possible the evaluation and a more accurate placing of Slovene monuments of monastic art into the European context. It will be based on the study of archival sources in native and foreign archives, mainly those in monasteries, on field work and on a more exhaustively prepared documentation about individual monuments and works of art (the research will also involve connections with other European countries, mainly those of Central Europe, and exchange of knowledge with them, and it will necessarily include the interdisciplinary knowledge, particularly that from the fields of theology, history, literature and music). Apart from the best researched Jesuits, it will concentrate on the selected monasteries of the Cistercians, Carthusians, Franciscans, Benedictines and Augustinians in Inner Austria.

The results of the research will be published in internationally recognized scholarly journals, thus disseminating the knowledge about the role of the monasteries in the development of art in the European context, since up to now Slovene monuments have not been sufficiently presented to foreign scholarly public and hence not included in the surveys of European art. The findings will also be useful to other humanities, tourism, education and preservation and presentation of monastic artistic monuments and collections.

The project will be carried out by the researchers of the France Stele Institute of Art History; they will concentrate on the selected monuments (religious orders) and the respective problematics. The research is thematically related to the institute's research programme Slovene Artistic Identity in European Context (P6-0061, 2009-2014) and to other research themes of the institute.
