A Town and its Memory / (Past) Visions of the Future and the Materialization of Memory in Public Space

On 8^th November between 18.00 and 22.00 an event titled A Town and its Memory will be held in the building of the Municipality of Nova Gorica to open an international conference and two accompanying exhibitions – the first an art historical presentation of Slavko Pengovʼs frescoes in the Municipality building, the second a photography exhibition of public monuments as silent witnesses.

The interdisciplinary international conference (Past) Visions of the Future and the Materialization of Memory in Public Space: Nova Gorica – A Town Built on the Border after the Second World War in Comparative Perspective will be held on 9^th and 10^th November. Organized by the France Stele Institute of Art History ZRC SAZU in cooperation with the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor, and the Municipality of Nova Gorica, it will bring together researchers from eight European countries to discuss public space and monuments. As a post-war town founded on the border, Nova Gorica and its 70-year long history provide an important reference frame for the debate about European memory studies in connection with art and architectural history. The conference aims to connect research on public monuments and urban planning with studies of (national) identity, ideologies and memory from the second half of the 19^th century until today at European level.

The international conference and the exhibitions are part of an applicative research project Mapping the Urban Spaces of Slovenian Cities from the Historical Perspective: Modernism of Nova Gorica and its Contexts (L6-8262), which is co-funded by the Slovenian Research Agency’s state budget, the Municipality of Nova Gorica and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
