Description

This art historical project researches the creation of the modernist post-war city of Nova Gorica, its urban design, its function and the importance of its public and architectural monuments, as well as the city’s development from the time it was created until today.

The Treaty of Paris from 1947, which established a new demarcation line between the Republic of Italy and the Federal Peopleʼs Republic of Yugoslavia, cut off Gorizia/Gorica, the former administrative, economic and culturally historical centre of the region, from its mostly agrarian outskirts of the Soča Valley and the Vipava Valley on the east. Consequently, there arose the need for building a new city on the Solkan field next to the new state border. The planning of the new city became the domain of the state authorities, and the suggestion of professor Edvard Ravnikar, who had already discussed it with his students within a seminar at the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana, was chosen. In 1948, in accordance with his urban outline, a new modernist housing estate was constructed on the Solkan meadows using strike brigades, but it was never entirely realized owing to changes in the political and economic circumstances in Yugoslavia at the turn of the 1940s to 1950s. In the following decades, the city’s construction was completely in the domain of the local authorities, and the adoption of new building and urban plans for Nova Gorica moved it ever further from Ravnikarʼs original vision of the city. In the scope of the project, basic art historical scientific research of post-war urbanism and modernist architecture will be carried out, which will create a detailed foundation for designing guidelines for the better protection of post-war heritage on our soil, and help to provide the basis for the preparation of appropriate urban and conservation plans for similar urban areas. The research will also focus on studying comparable, similarly designed cities, especially in Slovenia and the whole of former Yugoslavia. Therefore, the results of the project will contribute to placing post-war heritage in a wider Yugoslavian and European context, inside which it has not yet been appropriately identified and evaluated. The results will also serve as a representative example of researching the modernist architectural and urban heritage of other Slovenian cities, while it will also be possible to apply these research approaches to other, similarly designed European cities.

The basic research that will significantly contribute to the understanding and evaluating of modernist city heritage, will enable better promotion and a richer offering for tourists in Nova Gorica and its surroundings. The findings will be used in teaching and in the research processes in which the project group members participate. Part of the material collected in the scope of the project will also be used for the preparation of a topographical artistic inventory of the whole area of the Municipality of Nova Gorica.

Based on art historical, historical, urban and architectural methods, and on morphological and typological analysis, we will form a methodology that will enable the comprehensive treatment of Nova Gorica and will be possible to apply to similar studies. The results of our research will be presented to the professional and wider public in the form of scientific and professional articles, public lectures, pocket books, an art monograph or a city guide, a photography exhibition and a web portal about the city, which will be established by project colleagues from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (FERI) in Maribor. The portal will include a guide to the architectural and public monuments, as well as a presentation of people important to Nova Gorica, thematic routes, a digital visualization of how the city grew through time, a web exhibition etc.

A group of internationally renowned scientific researchers and young people at the beginning of their careers from the France Stele Institute of Art History ZRC SAZU and the University of Maribor (FERI and the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Arts) will participate in the project. Our research will also be conducted in cooperation with institutions of local significance: Goriški muzej (Goriška Museum), Goriška knjižnica Franceta Bevka (France Bevk Public Library Nova Gorica), Mestna galerija Nova Gorica (Nova Gorica City Gallery), Pokrajinski arhiv v Novi Gorici (Nova Gorica Regional Archives), Društvo humanistov Goriške (Goriška Humanist Association), Društvo Primorskih arhitektov (Architects' Society of Primorska Region), Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia – Regional Office Nova Gorica, ZRC SAZUʼs Research Station Nova Gorica etc. The applicative project is funded by the Slovenian Research Agency (75%), the Municipality of Nova Gorica (12%) and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (13%).
